Cashew is cultivated mostly as a small crop in Ghana and the commercial plantation sector is quite small. Roughly eighty-eight percent of cashew farms in the country are owned by small farmers, whose land size ranges from 0.8 hectares to three hectares. Meanwhile, large plantations represent twelve percent of cashew farms and range between four and forty hectares. Cashew plantations are integrated into the traditional polyculture system. The actual area covered by young cashew trees during their first three years is negligible. The space available is enough for intensive intercropping with short-cycle annual food crops.
