The Ivory Coast's cashew production
Cashew trees are not native to the Ivory Coast and were first imported in the 1960s as part of a widespread attempt to reverse the adverse effects of deforestation and desertification. The cashew cultivation industry in the Ivory Coast has grown in leaps and bounds since commercial production began in the 1990s, and today it employs a quarter of a million people directly in twenty separate cooperatives, while an additional million and a half citizens depend on it as a source of indirect income from cashew cultivation. The Ivory Coast's cashew production has been skyrocketing steadily since 1990. During this time the country's annual production was a little over 6,000 tonnes. It rose to 335,000 tonnes in 2008 and has reached close to a million tonnes over the past few years. This has allowed it to surpass India for the first time to become the world's largest exporter. The crop gained ground in the Ivory Coast in the late 1920s when the French colonial state promoted it as part of reforestation programs for the Savanna region. Cashew plantations were generally established in classified forests and in villages. Between 1929 and 1969, cashew trees made up 25 percent of trees planted in state reforestation projects. Over half of all these plantations were located in villages."
The Typical Cashew Nut Production Season In The Ivory Coast
The harvest season normally runs from March to June. During this period, the ripe fruits fall off on their own.
